Amazon.co.uk Review

Terror Twilight is Pavement's fifth proper studio album and perhaps their most confident effort to date. Opening with the surprisingly subdued leadoff single, the sinewy-sweet "Spit on a Stranger" (which sounds like the Velvet Underground after a couple of cartwheels), it's clear that Pavement is in no hurry to recreate Slanted and Enchanted's fractured and raw indie-pop. Instead of short bursts of jive poetry and razor guitars, the band opts for slightly longer songs with more subdued sonic explorations. Still, Terror Twilight never quite veers off into predictable directions; the boys' talent continues to confound expectations. Unforeseenly unironic heartstrings seem to be the thing these days for Pavement. This album boasts their finest ballads to date--"Major Leagues" and "Stranger"--but the days of fiery songs like "No Life for Ginger" may be over. Malkmus and crew seem to be heading in the same avant-pop direction as Built to Spill. But while Pavement may be more laid-back, they're still standing firm. Terror Twilight could be the bedrock upon which they build the rest of their career. --Jason Josephes

CD Description

Where 1997's BRIGHTEN THE CORNERS saw Stephen Malkmus and his merry band of indie rock pranksters shine a light on the band's rock-centric qualities, TERROR TWILIGHT harkens back to '95s WOWEE ZOWEE, when Pavement were all about the shambolic sprawl of Alternative possibility. Of course, four yearslater the context is entirely different--the band's fate asrock's (commercially unsuccessful) great post-Nirvana hope is nearly sealed. And maybe that's where both the terror andthe twilight come into play--in the realisation that preaching sprawling possibility to the converted is more a noose than an open field, that failed expectations are a setting sun.
So, a downbeat spirit pervades TWILIGHT's songs. And in this gloom, Malkmus looks for and finds soft, dark, melodic wonders: "Spit on a Stranger" turns its eye towards relationships, "Major Leagues" towards a careerist's self-worth, and "Ann Don't Cry" tries to be an anthem for outsiders whilevisibly flashing its own lonely tear. It's not until the closing "Carrot Rope", a sunny bit of mid-tempo Pavement-pop-foolery with two competing and overlapping vocals, that a major-key ray of light is cast upon the proceedings. Let's hopethat this little light is enough to get them through the night.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pavement are too good to be from america., 10 Nov 1999
By A Customer
Latest offering from the band responsible for Blurs change of sound. In the same vein as 'Brighten The Corners' Pavement have opted for an even more comercial sound but never leaving their lo-fi roots. Pavement have been among the most influencial bands to come from the states in the last 10 years and with every album strengthen their core following. Standing out among the surreal delights on this superb collection the stadium sized "Cream of Gold", and the beautiful "Major Leagues". Fantastic, I loved every second of it! Long live Pavement with your Gold Sounds and your Incandecent Blue Guillotines!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars It won't leave me alone!!, 29 Dec 1999

Terror Twilight is the album which introduced me to Pavement. It isn't a particularly easy record to get into, but like most difficult records, is all the more rewarding for that. The melodies get inside your head and stay there (especially the fantastic "Spit On A Stranger", "Carrot Rope" and "Major Leagues) and the lyrics can make you laugh out loud. Pavement are fantastic. Buy this album.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is the most puzzling band for the last six years or so, 4 Oct 1999
By A Customer
Ok so you've heard 'Carrot Rope' now lets get on to all theother good stuff, This is the most puzzling band for the last six years or so. They used Radiohead's producer Nigel Godrich, watch the name pop-up this year on another great album this year. Pavement have come up withsome fresh new ideas, this album is warmer and offers more quality listening than in their previous albums. Overall you are left with 45minutes of feeling just right, may Pavement live on.
